Control-Tec LLC is a technology company specializing in the acquisition, management and analysis of industry critical data.  While the current focus is validation of increasingly complex transportation industry propulsion solutions, the core strategy and resulting products are scalable across multiple business sectors.  Fundamentally, Control-Tec is a hybrid of classic Engineering and Information Technology disciplines whose charter is to simply - Turn Data into Knowledge.

Products and Services

Understanding the complexity and the need to proactively manage it, Control-Tec has developed a suite of tools to facilitate the development, validation and release of powertrain controls software and calibrations through data driven statistical methods. 

The combination of the Voice of the Customer feedback with Control-Tec's 100 years of industry experience has resulted in game-changing products.  Based on Design for Six Sigma principles resulting in a best in class products and services and not merely a one dimensional, single solution tool.

These new tools and services allow you to navigate through increasing regulatory complexity while improving Quality and managing cost pressure.

Calibrator - Calibration Management:: As complexity increases, so does the number of variables required to “tune” the system.  Many potential customers are evolving from simple systems and will require integrated quality checks and error proofing as things grow more complex.  Calibration Management enables the organization of your calibration data from concept development through the production release process.  An intuitive web based interface allows all responsible parties to collaborate, coordinate and release with confidence.  

Not only does Calibrator import all software types (ATI, Motorola, Siemens) and manage these calibrations and releases in development through production, but it also has built in quality checks.  The compare function allows multiple compares of calibrations, functions, or releases and a rule manager assigns rules to individual calibrations whether it is a number, range, or if-then statement.  This embeds quality into the development and more importantly the production released software.

Qualifier - System Validation Service: Control-Tec has created a vehicle level validation system that leverages data from multiple development fleets to assess system robustness and future quality.  Qualifier enables statistically founded system level validation.  By combining the data from engineering, durability, certification and customer based vehicle fleets and applying statistical separation analysis methods, Qualifier can enable both significantly improved quality and development cost savings.  Qualifier helps you to transform data into knowledge by actively monitoring critical parameters and communicating developing issues to Engineering PRIOR to failure – unprecedented in the Industry.

Qualifier uses internally developed proprietary software to collect relevant data from the vehicle and wirelessly upload it to the Web where it is transported to a Control-Tec database for processing and analysis.  The Web based design enables real-time access to data, issues, reports, and test status by all levels of your organization.  As the World gets flatter, remote testing and analysis offers large savings opportunities.   Expensive on-site Engineering support is not required and the automated analysis eliminates the need for large internal analysis functions.

Control-Tec has an existing partnership with Test Service provider Roush, where they will deliver data acquisition and management services to the end customers. With on-road test sites nationally, this partnership is a critical part of the validation activity OEM’s undertake in validating all subsystems at geographically and climatically diverse locations.

Tracciato – Time-Based Data Viewer:  This intuitive data analysis application is a comprehensive, platform independent application that imports time-based data for easy viewing and analysis.  Tracciato is optimized for multiple sources and different formats such as .cvs, .mdf, .m, .mat, and .dat.  The application gives you the ability to create templates for repeated analysis, has built in statistics, and allows customization of your data view.  All of this gives you the ability to turn data into knowledge with one tool regardless of the data acquisition type.

Business Need

The proliferation of environmental regulatory mandates has necessitated an explosion of new technology in the transportation industry.  In complying with requirements to reduce our Carbon Footprint and mitigate Global Warming (2 separate activities!), companies must embrace complex mechanical and electrical solutions, such as expensive emissions aftertreatment technologies or plug-in electric hybrids, to remain viable. 

While the historic focus has been primarily automotive, regulators have adopted legislation that now targets, On-Road and Off-Road diesel engines, stationary diesels engines, the rail industry, marine applications, airport ground vehicles, port support vehicles, and others.  Compound all of this with the need to improve Quality to simply maintain market share and you begin to see the Control-Tec niche.

Simply put, our automotive experience enables us to understand the challenges facing the aforementioned sectors and offer both product and process solutions to enable compliance with the new requirements at reduced cost while improving Quality in a market where the barriers to entry are high.

Along with their strong relationship with Roush, Control-Tec is also partnered with software development, OBD certification testing, and Design for Six Sigma companies.

Background

Control-Tec, LLC was formed by former Powertrain Controls Systems engineers and is now comprised of 9 employees in total.  Control-Tec has over 100 years of industry experience in powertrain control systems design and deployment in areas of emissions, diagnostics (OBDII), fuel economy, transmissions, and drive-by-wire safety systems.  This experience at the OEM level has culminated in the design and release of hundreds of successful powertrain variants.

Control-Tec’s principals have significant leadership experience and were charged with the management of 120 employees that were responsible for all of Chrysler’s Powertrain Diagnostic controls, Powertrain Tools and overall Powertrain System Reliability.
